Sara Dochnal, graduate student in the Cliffe lab just won first place in the Grad thesis slam!

Sara Dochnal, graduate student in the Anna Cliffe laboratory just won first place in the Grad thesis slam! The competition is a modification of Three Minute Thesis (3 MT). In this competition, doctoral students from different disciplines across the University explain the significance of and findings from their several years of thesis research into three single minutes. The idea is the talk should be digestible by the general public, who are likely not in your discipline.
There is a preliminary round from which 8 finalists are selected and compete in front of 3 new judges and a broader audience. From the 8 finalists, the top three places are announced and there is also a People’s Choice Award, which the audience members select via ballot. Before the preliminaries, there is a Grad Thesis SLAM Prep Series offered in the Spring. Once a week for a few weeks, an instructor (Amy Aines) teaches the basics for formulating a talk that is impactful and the doctoral candidates are able to bounce ideas off of other graduate students.
