Dr. Rasheed A. BalogunCongratulations to Dr. Rasheed A. Balogun, who will deliver the July 2025 Presidential Address for the International Society for Apheresis (ISFA) at the 15th World Congress of the ISFA in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Balogun will serve as President of ISFA for a two-year term.

Michelle TranDr. Michelle Tran to Receive Faculty Appointment
Dr. Michelle Tran has accepted a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine on the Clinical Faculty Track, effective November 1, 2025. Michelle has been an exceptional leader during her time as Chief Nephrology Fellow, and we’re delighted that she will continue to bring her energy to UVA in her new role as Core Education Faculty. Her responsibilities will include serving as an inpatient consult attending, taking on primary teaching duties, providing care for dialysis patients at UVA Culpeper, seeing ambulatory CKD patients, and serving as Medical Director of UVA Dialysis at Culpeper.

Congratulations to Dr. Julia Scialla, who was recognized with a Distinguished Mentor Award by the American Society of Nephrology. The ASN acknowledges individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and achievements in patient care, research, and education.


Virmani

Congratulations to Dr. Sarthak Virmani, who has been approved as a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation (FAST). The FAST designation recognizes AST members who have demonstrated both exceptional commitment to the field of transplantation and outstanding service to the Society.

Fernando C. Fervenza, MD., D.Phil (Oxon – Jesus College), is a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Rochester, MN, USA. He graduated in Medicine at the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and underwent clinical and research training at Oxford University, England (1985-1991) and Stanford University, USA (1993-1997). He is a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine-Nephrology section, Up-To-Date Section Editor for Glomerular Disease. His interest is in pursuing patient-oriented research aiming to advance knowledge in the pathogenesis of GNs and bring new therapies to these patients.
