Renewing Our Spaces: A Journey Through UVA Ophthalmology’s Renovations
Over the past year, the Department of Ophthalmology has invested in its academic and clinical spaces to create a brighter, more welcoming environment for faculty, trainees, and patients. From the moment you enter our offices to the rooms where we teach and care for patients, these updates reflect our commitment to excellence in every corner of the department.

New automatic glass doors welcome visitors into our academic offices.

New lighting, flooring, and UVA-blue accents brighten the space.
The entrance to our academic offices now opens through sleek automatic glass doors. Marked clearly with “Department of Ophthalmology” and “Academic Offices,” the new entryway sets a professional tone while improving accessibility.
Just beyond the doors, bright new hallway lights, UVA-blue accents, and updated flooring create a space that feels modern and inviting for staff and visitors alike.

A new table, display, and teleconference tools support seamless collaboration.

Artwork and lighting work together to give the conference room a warm, elegant feel.
Inside the Chair’s Suite, our library has been transformed into a state-of-the-art conference room.
A new long, boat-shaped table anchors the room, complete with built-in outlets and HDMI ports for seamless collaboration. At one end, a large display, podium, and teleconference camera with speaker-tracking technology make it possible to connect across distances while keeping the focus in the room. New lighting, art, and furnishings give the space a warm, professional character—making it equally suited for departmental meetings, academic discussions, and visiting speakers.

Our newly renovated exam rooms offer a fresh, modern environment for patient care.
The renovations also extend into the clinical setting. Among the updates are new exam rooms, designed to be spacious, well-equipped, and welcoming. These modernized spaces support physicians and staff in delivering the highest quality care while ensuring comfort for patients and families.
With the UVA Health LASIK Northridge and Steven A. Newman, MD Surgical Skills Lab launched last year and this year’s renovations now complete, our department continues to invest in facilities that expand opportunity for discovery, education, and patient care.
These changes are more than cosmetic. They reflect our ongoing investment in people and in mission. As our faculty, staff, and trainees continue to grow in their work, our facilities now reflect that same forward-looking vision.
