Dr. Oleksandr Yanko’s travel award.

UVA Pathology had another strong showing this March at the Annual Meeting of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Anne Mills giving a speech at USCAP 2025.

The meeting kicked off Sunday with Anne Mills moderating the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathology (APSS) companion society meeting, which included the happy announcement that our own PGY2 resident Oleksandr (Alex) Yanko received the society’s annual Travel Award in support of his away election studying lymphoproliferative disorders of the skin with Alejandro Gru: Congratulations Dr. Yanko!  Later in the morning, Dr. Julie Fanburg-Smith co-led the companion session for the International Society of Bone Soft Tissue.

Monday morning saw residents and fellows presenting on a host of interesting topics in the Stowell-Orbison Poster Session.  Linglei Ma’s mentees, PGY2 Alex Yanko and PGY1 Mahsa Hajizadeh, shared their work on ATRX in anogenital malignant melanomas and p16 in inflammatory dermatoses.  PGY2 Kyle Carlson and Gyn/Breast fellow Eyas Alzayadneh shared results from endometrial carcinoma collaborations with Dr. Mills studying FGFR2 mutations and tumors with gastrointestinal-type morphology.  Working under the guidance of Julie Fanburg-Smith, PGY-3 Andrew Biesemier presented on deep juvenile xanthogranuloma, which was also selected for a prestigious moderated poster session!  Dr. Fanburg-Smith’s study on methylome profiling in uterine smooth muscle tumors was also featured in the Gyn platforms sessions, provoking an excellent discussion from the engaged audience.  In the afternoon, PGY3 Natalie Hillerson shared her project mentored by Robin LeGallo on autopsy and emotional wellness, while Dr. Mills presented two courses on gynecologic carcinoma biomarkers.  The day culminated with a raucous dinner at Trillium Fort Point Brewing, with many former trainees joining for the celebration: it was an absolute blast!

A mix of previous and current UVA Pathology faculty, fellows, and residents have a get-together at USCAP 2025.

Highpoints from the rest of the week included Matt McCord’s session on molecular predictors of meningioma recurrence and Jeffrey Craig’s talk on leichmaniasis in bone marrow evaluation.  Trainees continued to shine, with medical student Erin Saunders delivering a superb platform presentation on NOTCH loss-of-function mutations in lung carcinoma and medical student Bri Wilson presenting a poster on the microRNA effector enzyme AGO2 in endometrial carcinoma. The meeting rounded out with some hematopathology highlights, including Elizabeth Courville’s practical talk on “near misses” and her fellow Jenny Zhang’s poster on abnormal monocyte maturation and myeloid neoplasms.

Overall, it was a superb sampling of the depth and breadth of clinically impactful work that happens at UVA.  See you in San Antonio for 2026!
