Anatomic Pathology

About

Kristen A. Atkins, M.D. Division Chief

Our division is committed to consistent excellence in patient care.  To meet this goal, we strive to provide accurate and timely diagnostics with uniformity in reporting and testing across all faculty.  We aim to be good stewards of tissue, resources, and cost.  In order to obtain and maintain competency and clinician trust we will hold ourselves and each other accountable for providing education, feedback on errors, and adherence to standards set by the group.

The Division of Anatomic Pathology provides tissue and cytologic diagnostic services as well as autopsy service. In addition to general Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology services, specialty diagnostic subservices include neuropathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, renal pathology, ocular pathology and muscle pathology. Specific faculty have subspecialty training in and/or have developed internationally-acknowledged expertise in gastrointestinal, head and neck, gynecologic/breast, pulmonary, pediatric, genitourinary and bone/soft tissue pathology. Histopathologic diagnosis is supported by a full range of molecular techniques, including immunohistochemistry, chromogenic in situ hybridization and fluorescence in situ hybridization. The AP services accession over 30,000 cases per year, and perform approximately 220 autopsies per year.
