Pathology Consultation Information

UVa Health System’s Pathology Department evaluates over 31,000 surgical specimens and over 30,000 cytology specimens every year, and is a resource to other pathologists across the state in interpreting more difficult cases.

Our pathologists function as part of a cohesive team, with 14 fully trained and certified surgical pathologists. This team approach means that a difficult biopsy specimen is usually examined by several pathologists, one or more of whom has special experience or training in the type of cancer being considered.

For questions or information, please call (434) 924-LABS (5227)

As partner with fellow pathologists and clinicians across the region, we are available to assist in the interpretation of difficult and complex cases. It is our commitment to provide physicians with expert diagnostic pathology services that can guide and inform the care and treatment plans of patients.

Medical Laboratories

The faculty of the Department of Pathology serve as the Directors of the Medical Laboratories at the University of Virginia Health System. These laboratories support the care of patients at our health system, provide outside physicians with expert referral services and carry out clinical trials to advance health care for all.

Please visit the Medical Laboratories Home Page for more information.
