- The B.R.I.D.G.E. Initiative connects faculty, trainees, and communities to foster pediatric care, advance scholarship, and support professional growth through focused engagement.

- Recruitment strategies (outreach, holistic review process, workforce development)

- Training programs including workshops, webinars, leadership development, and approaches to supportive care.

Example projects:
- Establish a language/marketing team to review current job descriptions, website copy, email, and social media communications.
- Establish a Built Environment Team to review our patient/faculty/staff environments to ensure access to services (bus routes, food pantries, art, signage, consent forms).
- Establish a Patient Feedback Review Team committed to reviewing our patient feedback systems for faculty and to maximize patient opportunities for providing feedback.
- Representation on IRB and Grant Review Committees
- Home Visit Program, a resident-run monthly clinic for well-child and sick visits
- Global Health Leadership Track, a GME-wide program that includes
opportunities for rotations in various countries - Back-to-school physicals, outreach vaccinations events, health fairs “in partnership with various community organizations”
- Southwood Community Center
- Social Health Morning Rounds
- Community Health Grants
- Clinical rotations at various pediatric clinics (etc. UVA Pediatric Primary Care locations, International Family Medicine, Population Health Mobile Health Clinic, & Charlottesville Free Clinic)
- UVA provides specialized medical services for youth ages 11 to 26 at the Teen and Young Adult Health Center.
Conferences & Organizations
Over the past several years, UVA Pediatrics has actively participated in both regional and national Student National Medical Association (SNMA) conferences to support the recruitment of talented medical students. Each year, the department proudly sponsors one to two residents to attend these conferences as ambassadors.

Recent Local Partnership Building and Outreach
- Virtual Observership in Pediatrics (VOP) program created and led by Drs. Debbie-Ann Shirley and Dr. Sarah Boggs
- Asymptomatic COVID-19 testing program to reduce the length of quarantine and time away from school. Organized and staffed by multiple faculty and staff members from UVA Children’s Hospital
- Food insecurity program created by Drs. Wrentmore & Gander; Tegan Medico, RD; Lashanna Hicks, LCSW; Blanca Garcia-Segundo, LCSW
2024 - 2025 Events
- Walking Tour: “The Story of Us” – A guided tour highlighting local stories and portraits from Charlottesville.
- Happy Hour Party at Vitae Spirits in Downtown Charlottesville.
- Parade and Celebration at the Jefferson School Heritage Center.
- Iftar dinner to acknowledge the end of the fasting during Ramadan at Sultan Kabob.
- Equality Virginia – Equality Virginia works across the Commonwealth to ensure that every individual is treated with fairness, respect, and dignity. We engage with communities to promote policies that strengthen protections, foster understanding, and support the well-being of all Virginians.
