Education
The University of Virginia Department of Pediatrics offers a rigorous and well-rounded educational experience designed to prepare future pediatricians for excellence in clinical care, research, and academic leadership. Through a structured residency and fellowship program, trainees engage in daily didactic sessions, morning reports, subspecialty electives, and interdisciplinary conferences that foster clinical expertise and professional growth.
Research
The University of Virginia Department of Pediatrics continues to advance child health through rigorous research, strategic faculty development, and institutional investment. The department has demonstrated strong performance in national rankings, placing 36th nationally among pediatric departments.

UVA Optional Retirement Plan (ORP)
- Defined contribution plan: UVA contributes 8.9% of salary; participant contributes 5% (pre-tax, up to IRS limits).

UPG BEST Plan
- UPG contributes 10.4% of UPG salary (after-tax, invested via MetLife).

Supplemental 401(k)
- Additional employer contributions based on years of service (1–4 years: 1%, 5–9: 2%, 10–14: 3%, 15+: 4%).
- Immediate eligibility and automatic enrollment.
Alternative Savings
- 403(b) and 457 plans available for tax-deferred and after-tax savings.
- UVA matches 50% of contributions (up to $40/month).
- UPG offers Roth 403(b) and additional after-tax savings via the BEST Plan.
Life Insurance
- UVA: 1x base salary (group term), option to purchase up to 4x salary.
- UPG: Universal life plan (BEST) for 5x total base salary (up to $3M), guaranteed issue, spouse/child coverage available.
Disability Insurance
- Short-term: 100% salary continuation for approved leave (no waiting period).
- Long-term: UVA (UNUM) and UPG (STANDARD) provide up to 66⅔% of salary, with continued contributions and COL increases.
- Three plans: Basic plan; high deductible health plan, and UVA PPO
- Direct access to providers, no pre-existing condition exclusions.
- Health Savings Account (HSA) with UVA contributions ($1,000 individual, $1,500 family).
Dental Insurance
- Two plans: Basic ($1,000 max, no orthodo,ntia), Enhanced ($2,000 max, orthodontia covered).
- Monthly premiums from $1 (single, basic) to $49.75 (family, enhanced).
Vision Insurance
- Davis Vision plan: annual eye exam, frames/lenses or contacts at reduced rates.
- Monthly premiums: $8.32 (single) to $23.30 (family).
Flexible Spending Accounts
- Pre-tax dollars for medical, dental, vision, and dependent care expenses.
- Limited FSA available for Basic Health Plan participants.
