Study Title: Near-Death Experiences During Labor and Delivery
Protocol #: 5849

Call for research participants who have had a near-death experience during childbirth/delivery/labor

The Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is recruiting individuals who have had a near-death experience (NDE) during childbirth/delivery/labor for an online study. NDEs are subjective and potentially transformative experiences that sometimes occur when one is in a medical crisis or close to death. NDEs may involve the sensation of leaving one’s body, going through a tunnel, positive emotions, and a sense of having a life review, among others. The study explores the characteristics of NDEs during childbirth and how they may influence women’s perceptions of the birth experience and their overall postpartum well-being.

  • Participation in the study will take up 30-45 minutes of your time
  • A single online questionnaire
  • Eligibility: NDE during childbirth/delivery/labor, 18 years of age or older, and English fluency
  • You will not be paid for your participation
