Aug 6-12, 2018: SNMA Week of Reflection and Positivity

  • Aug 6th, 8th and 10th (MWF), 12-2pm, In front of Claude Moore Library:   Stop by our station to take photos and send a positive message to the community. Unity T-shirts will be available for sale ($17 cash or can venmo at anytime to @UVASNMA). Funds will be donated to an organization vested in promoting minority interests in Charlottesville. Please sign up here to help man our station.

  • Aug 8th (Wed), 6-8pm, In UVA MED ED Learning Studio: Round table discussions following viewing of VICE movie documentary on Aug 12, 2017.

  • Aug 10 (Fri), 12.30PM, Location TBD : T-shirt group photo day. Wear your unity T-shirt and join in a group photo.

  • Aug 11 (Sat), 9.30-12.30AM,  Loaves & Fishes Pantry : Volunteer community service at Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry (2050 Lambs Road). Loaves & Fishes provides groceries at no cost to low-income families within and around the Charlottesville community. We will be able to take up to 20 volunteers to this opportunity.   • Aug 12 (Sun), UVA MED ED Learning studio: SNMA-Mulholland Potluck. 5-7pm in UVA Med ED Learning Studio. Our community coming together to share a meal is the perfect symbol of togetherness that we need to conclude the week. Please, we invite you all to join us.

  • Week long :Social media takeover on ways we are positively impacting our community. Take a photo with your T-shirt and share with the hashtags #Charlottesvillleisaplacefor and #UVASNMA

SNMA invited minority faculty of the School of Medicine to speak with medical students about their experiences as minority physicians at UVA.

Game Nights

SNMA hosts social events for members including game nights. Below are photos from the very first game night that included a game of pool and spades. Other social events include bowling night, and Holiday party.

Boys and Girls Club Volunteering (May 12, 2016)

SNMA participates in several community service activities throughout the academic year. This year, we partnered with the Boys and Girls club and Public Health students to host a health fair for 1st-6th grade children. The two stations we hosted were First Aid and 911 Emergency/Medications Play.

Second Look Weekend (April 1-3, 2016)

During Second Look Weekend, accepted students return to visit the UVA campus. The weekend begins with check-in to your hotel room. Workshops such as suturing, ENT, and a Team Based Learning activity are offered on Saturday. Social events like a potluck are arranged throughout the weekend. Don’t worry! There are still activities that allow you to interact with non-SNMA members during second look. Sunday usually caps the weekend with a housing tour.

Resident Panel (December 14, 2015)

Minority residents from various specialties were invited to speak with medical students about their experiences in medicine with varying topics from being a minority in medicine, choosing a specialty, and work/life balance.

Holiday Toy Drive and Party (December 5, 2015)

During the 2015 holiday season, SNMA hosted a Toy Drive and Holiday Party that provided gifts for almost 130 kids from the New Haven Community.

Pre-med Minority Mixer (November 9, 2015)

SNMA works with the Daniel Hale Williams (DHW) Premedical Honor Society to increase the number of underrepresented minorities applying to medical school.  The Pre-med Minority Mixer was an opportunity for UVA undergraduates to meet with medical students in an informal setting, learn about the application process for medical school, and inquire about what is necessary to become a competitive applicant.

Buford Middle School AVID Volunteer Event (October 9, 2015)

SNMA hosted middle school students from Buford Middle School. We took them on a tour of the medical school, engaged them in a medical student panel, and taught clinical skills in the Clinical Skills Center.

Sickle Cell Awareness (September 15, 17, 22, 24, 2015)

Several SNMA students volunteer to table for Sickle Cell Awareness month. This a fundraising opportunity where red ribbons and bracelets are sold and general information is provided about sickle cell.
