Margaret Kosek, MD

The Kosek laboratory has developed a laboratory and clinic that together forms a translational research center in communities and health care centers in the Peruvian Amazon.  The goal of this center is to direct highly interdisciplinary study of infectious diseases in children in order improve child health.  Our center conducts study on enteric infectious diseases, malaria, undernutrition, enteropathy, acute febrile illnesses, and conducts clinical trials in order to evaluate interventions.  Additional areas of research include the environmental determinants of infectious disease, antimicrobial use in animals and in humans and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance among key human pathogens.  This site regularly works to improve local diagnostics, conduct sequencing and advanced genomic epidemiology, and enable the implementation of improved diagnostics and public health decision making.  Our laboratory seeks to increase health equity by bringing date of the art science to communities and problems that traditionally have not received resource and time investments.  We do this in the setting of inclusive enquiry and capacity building with Peruvian colleagues and trainees from Peru and UVA at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional level.
