Dean’s Excellence in Faculty Research Award
Purpose
To recognize excellence in School of Medicine faculty research efforts at the individual and team levels. Individual awards: Up to 4 recipients yearly. Team awards: 3 or more faculty members consist of a team – Potential of 1 team per year. The award is $1,500 for individual awards; for the team science award, $1,500 for each faculty team member, up to $6,000/year. The nomination deadline is Friday, May 17, 2024.
Award Nomination
The award winners will be announced by the Dean. The Dean will notify each awardee’s Department Chair and the Dean’s Office will be responsible for appropriate publicity in University and non-University publications.
Who May Nominate
Nominations may be submitted from any School of Medicine faculty member, but faculty are not permitted to self-nominate for this award.
Criteria
Nominees should be selected for faculty accomplishments in research, including both career and recent exceptional contributions to scientific research (basic, clinical and translational). Nominees must demonstrate exemplary compliance with UVA Health’s ASPIRE values.
Senior Faculty Awards
Purpose: To recognize excellence in senior SOM faculty research efforts at the individual level.
- the nominee’s curriculum vitae
- a nominating letter: the nominating letter should include a description of the faculty’s significant work, including career and recent contributions to scientific research and the impact to their field and to the larger scientific community (including but not limited to citations, h factor, translational significance, ways in which they have enabled new areas of research or technologies, collaborations).
- no more than 3 supporting letters.
Upon submission of the nomination packet, the Dean’s Office will solicit the statement from the nominee’s department chair or division chief that attests to the nominee’s exemplary demonstration of UVA Health’s ASPIRE values
The selection committee is comprised of the Senior Associate Dean for Research, the Assistant Dean for Research, and members of the Research Advisory Committee. The committee is advisory to the Dean who will make the final selection.

Junior Faculty Awards
Purpose: To recognize excellence in junior SOM faculty research efforts at the individual level.
- Any junior School of Medicine faculty member who conducts research. (Assistant or Associate Professors, not tenured).
- Nominees must demonstrate exemplary compliance with UVA Health’s ASPIRE values.
- Faculty may not nominate themselves for this award.
The selection committee is comprised of the Senior Associate Dean for Research, the Assistant Dean for Research, and members of the Research Advisory Committee. The committee is advisory to the Dean who will make the final selection.

- A letter of nomination. The nominating letter should include a description of the faculty’s significant work, with emphasis on recent accomplishments, translational significance, and the current and potential impact to their field and the scientific community
- no more than 3 supporting letters.

Team Science Research Award
Purpose: To recognize excellence in SOM faculty team research efforts.
Nominated teams must have made significant research contributions with notable scientific and/or clinical impact. Nominees must demonstrate exemplary compliance with UVA Health’s ASPIRE values.
Please assure all nominated team members are employed as School of Medicine faculty members.
The selection committee is comprised of the Senior Associate Dean for Research, the Assistant Dean for Research, and members of the Research Advisory Committee. The committee is advisory to the Dean who will make the final selection.
- A letter of nomination. The nominating letter should include a description of the team’s significant work, including contributions of each member of the team to the effort, the contributions to scientific research and the impact to their field and to the larger scientific community. Translational projects will be given preference.
- A curriculum vitae for all faculty team members
- A letter of support from each team member’s department chair
- No more than 3 supporting letters
