Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award
Purpose
The University of Virginia School of Medicine Awards for Excellence in Teaching recognize faculty who excel in teaching students, including medical students, biomedical sciences (BIMS) PhD candidates, or MPH candidates. This award is not intended for GME activities.
The award is $1,500 and a gift; the nomination deadline is Monday, March 24, 2025.
Award Presentation
The award winners will be announced by the Dean. The Dean will notify each awardee’s Department Chair. The Dean’s Office will be responsible for appropriate publicity in University and non-University publications.
Award Qualifications
Nominees must demonstrate exemplary compliance with UVA Health’s ASPIRE values. Nominees must be faculty members of the University of Virginia School of Medicine with a rank of Assistant Professor or above who have not received this award, the Award for Excellence in Teaching, within the past three years.
The Recommendation Committee will review all nominations and select up to five awardees. The committee is advisory to the Dean who will make the final selection.
The selection committee will be composed of the following:
- The Director for the Center of Excellence in Education will chair the meeting, comprised of
- The Center for Excellence in Education’s Academy for Excellence in Education Educator Advancement Committee
- A letter of nomination from a faculty member familiar with the nominee’s teaching/mentoring, describing the nominee’s teaching/mentoring activities and including supporting evidence of the nominee’s educational excellence and worthiness for the award (3-page limit)
- One letter of support from a current student
- Three additional letters/testimonials from current or former students or faculty colleagues of the nominee
- An updated curriculum vitae
- Relevant portions of the teaching portfolio (optional)
Upon submission of the nomination packet, the Dean’s Office will solicit the statement from the nominee’s department chair or division chief that attests to the nominee’s exemplary demonstration of UVA Health’s ASPIRE values
