Research Interests

Dr. Gurka is an epidemiologist whose research centers on maternal and child health, injury and violence prevention, and reducing harm from substance use. Committed to equity, she is passionate about conducting community-engaged research that drives meaningful improvements in public health.

Research Description

With funding from NIH, CDC, NIJ, and HRSA, Dr. Gurka examines injury and violence across a range of settings, from work to home, particularly among women and children. She has experience conducting cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, utilizing primary and secondary data as well as qualitative and quantitative methods. She is passionate about partnering with community and agency partners and including participants from groups historically excluded from research in her studies. When possible, she conducts practice-informed research, aiming to accelerate the translation of research findings into public health practice and policy change.
