Clostridium difficile infection, infection in aged host, microbiome-immune response interactions, innate immune response
Research Description
Dr. Shin's research focuses on Clostridium difficile infection in the aged host. His research using an aged mouse model of infection showed a significant deficiency in innate immune response in aged mice along with higher mortality. Changing of the intestinal microbiome by fecal transplant from young mice restores the immune response and improves survival, revealing an important immune-modulatory effect of the microbiome. The direction of the research is to identify the host response pathways mediating this microbiome effect on immune response.
