Mechanisms of antimicrobial action and microbial strategies of resistance.
Research Description
My current research includes investigations into the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens. Especially interesting are novel examinations regarding how modifications of lipid A that confer colistin resistance impact the function and spread of other clinically relevant resistance determinants such as carbapenemases. My research also includes the development of antimicrobial, chemokine-derived peptides for use as immunostimulatory-antibiotic peptides to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens. Additionally, as part of a collaborative effort, I am also working to develop genotypic / phenotypic diagnostic platforms to identify antibiotic resistance and inform empirical treatment.
