The School of Data Science will support three students per master’s cohort as they complete coursework in genomics data science.

The University of Virginia’s School of Data Science will soon add coursework in genomics data science to its master’s program, reflecting the rapid growth of this critical discipline.

The program, called the Research Experiences in Genomic Applications of Responsible Data Science, or REGARDS, will be run in collaboration with the Center for Public Health Genomics, part of UVA’s School of Medicine. The aim is to prepare students for careers in genomics research or additional advanced studies in the field, such as a doctoral program, as they pursue an M.S. in data science.

The effort was made possible following an award from the National Institutes of Health and will support three students per cohort in the residential data science master’s program, beginning in 2025.

The new coursework will leverage the School’s long-running capstone projects where students work with an external organization to tackle a data science challenge. The REGARDS program will provide opportunities for students to gain valuable research experience in UVA genomics labs.

Additionally, the School of Data Science will develop new courses in genomics data science as well as modify existing offerings to include more genomics examples and lab exercises.

Genomic data analysis is a critical need in biomedical, behavior, and clinical research communities, with the potential to improve disease diagnosis and surveillance.

As part of this new initiative, the School of Data Science will recruit candidates from groups historically underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, a reflection of the School’s commitment to expanding access to data science careers.

More information about the program and how to apply will be available on the School of Data Science website this fall.
