100th Anniversary Meeting of the ASCP

September 28, 2022 by rs5zr@virginia.edu

UVA Pathology faculty and staff were honored to participate in the 100th Anniversary Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).  This is the largest and oldest professional society that represents the entire Pathology and laboratory medicine professionals with 100,000 members.  Laboratory Manager Walter Oliveira  represents Laboratory Professionals on the ASCP Board of Directors as well as serving on the Flow Cytometry and Medical Laboratory Assistant exam committees with the Board of Certification.  His longtime commitment was also rewarded with the privilege of meeting famous pathologist Dr. Vivian Pinn.  Assistant Professor Dr. Ifey Obiorah headlined the Society for Hematopathology Companion session on updates in bone marrow pathology, while her colleague Associate Professor Dr. Elizabeth Courville led a packed house through peripheral blood morphology clues.  Associate Professor Dr. Anne Mills presented the  Michele Raible Resident Lecture on challenging endometrial cancer cases… an honor that was amplified by the fact that UVA Path Emeritus Professor (and ASCP Past President!) Dr. Mark Stoler sat in the audience.  The best moment of the meeting, however, was undoubtedly when Michelle Obama took the stage for a conversation about work for shortages in laboratory medicine: a true inspiration to the thousands in attendance!
