PHAR 9001 and 9002
Course Summary
Pharmacology is the study of drug action. PHAR 9001 and PHAR 9002 cover the major classes of therapeutically relevant drugs as well as how they work at the molecular and cellular levels. Since drugs work by modifying the body’s physiological and biochemical processes, it is necessary to know how the body works, and successful completion of the BIMS modules Physiology A and B is required prior to enrollment in the Pharmacology modules. Both PHAR 9001 and PHAR 9002 are required for Pharmacology Ph.D. students.
PHAR 9001 – Principles of Pharmacology I (2 credits)
The first block of Pharmacology is offered as a Fall 1 (F1) module. Topics include: Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, Autonomics/cholinergic agents, Autonomics/adrenergic agents, Diuretics, Renin-angiotensin, hypertension, Angina, Antiarrhythmics, Heart failure, Antithrombotics, Atherosclerosis, and Sedative/hypnotics.
PHAR 9002 – Principles of Pharmacology II (2 credits)
The second block of Pharmacology is offered as a Fall 2 (F2) module. Topics include: Antidepressants, Antipsychotics, Local and general anesthetics, Opiates, Drugs of abuse, Epilepsy, Glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants, Antihistamines, NSAIDs, Asthma, Diabetes and obesity, GI drugs, osteoporosis, thyroid, retinoids, reproductive pharmacology, antibacterials, antivirals, antiparasitics, antifungals, and anticancer drugs.
