Associate Professor Tim McMurry and colleagues from UVA’s Center for Applied Biomechanics have been recognized by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) of the United Kingdom’s 3rd annual Statistic of the Year competition. The UVA research group garnered a “Highly Commended” ranking in the International Statistics Category for their finding – 73%: Women car passengers wearing seatbelts are an estimated 73% more likely to be seriously injured in frontal car crashes than men (source: University of Virginia and highlighted in Caroline Criado Perez’s book, ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’). McMurry and colleagues published their findings in the Journal of Trafffic Injury Prevention.
