Oral Health Division

About

At UVA, we provide comprehensive/family dental care. General Dentists make up our full-time staff. We rely on part-time specialists in the department and from local private practices to lend expertise for complicated conditions.

Insurance Accepted

We currently participate with:

  • Regional United Concordia
  • Aetna Dental
  • Delta Dental

In addition, we participate with Medicaid for medically necessary dental care referrals from UVA Health System physicians and clinics. This reduces complications associated with specific medical problems and treatments.

Dentistry Residency

An ADA/CODA accredited General Practice Dental Residency is associated with our department. Graduate dentists who are licensed do not require a residency to practice. This is a selective and elective program designed to provide clinical and didactic experience above the level of teaching provided at a dental school.

Our residents learn to manage dental care in patients who are medically compromised through the interdisciplinary involvement of Dentistry and Health System medical services.

Learn More

We currently have 2 clinics:

  • 1222 Jefferson Park Ave. (“JPA”)
  • The Battle Building

The JPA clinic is an 11 room operatory clinic located on the 2nd floor. At the JPA location, we treat private and specialty care patients.

Four operatories are designed for hygiene, and the others are procedure-oriented. We also have a 13th operatory which is large enough to accommodate a mobile stretcher. It’s mainly used as a recovery room when not being used for consult care.

Equipment Available

We currently use Adec carts, Star handpieces, and Adec chairs. The operatories are dual entry, and they can be switched to accommodate both right and left-handed dentists. They are plumbed for nitrous units. Nitrous oxide is one of our several sedation adjuncts.

Pediatric Dentistry

Learn More

Our  pediatric dental clinic is next door in the Battle Building. The Battle Building is the hub of UVA Health Children’s hospital, which treats pediatric patients. Many of these patients have additional medical needs.

The Battle clinic has 4 operatories, with Adec carts and chairs. There are also Star handpieces and a Cone Beam Sirona machine.

In addition to the outpatient clinics, the Battle Building has an outpatient ambulatory surgery center. Dentistry still performs the bulk of its operating room/general anesthesia cases in the main hospital OR suite.
