Resident Chioma Moneme, MD was awarded the second annual Mark A. Fleming, II Award for Advocacy in Graduate Medical Education. This is an institutional award named after Dr. Markie Fleming, 2024 graduate of UVA Surgery.
Dr. Moneme is a fearless advocate for trainees, students, patients and beyond. She used her unique position as both HCDI E-Board member and Housestaff Council co-president in 2022-2023 to foster collaboration between HSC and HCDI to better serve all trainees. In 2023-2024, she went on to be a co-president of HCDI. She worked tirelessly to organize the annual Trainee Conference with a focus on Housing Insecurity, helped recruit prospective trainees at local and national conferences, and led multiple Charlottesville community outreach events. At every event she is involved with—and there are many!—Chioma always makes an extra effort to collaborate with local vendors and help them gain publicity. Within the Surgery department, she has mentored countless students in the field as they navigate the application process.
