About

University of Virginia Dr. Allan Tsung, MD,, Chair Department of Surgery

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

The University of Virginia has a proud tradition of excellence in medicine and surgery dating back nearly two centuries. Surgical education at UVA began in 1838 when Dr. James Cabell became the University’s first Chair of Surgery. While we are proud of this rich history, our focus remains firmly on the future. Every day, we strive to improve the lives of our patients through exceptional clinical care, innovative research, outstanding surgical education, and the development of the next generation of surgical leaders.

Our greatest strength is our people. Across our department, nationally recognized faculty collaborate to advance patient care through scientific discovery, multidisciplinary teamwork, and surgical innovation. We are committed to creating an environment where curiosity, collaboration, and excellence drive meaningful advances in surgery while providing outstanding educational opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty.

As an academic department, we believe our responsibility extends beyond caring for today’s patients. We are equally committed to educating tomorrow’s surgeons, advancing new discoveries, and developing future leaders who will shape the future of our profession. Through a culture of mentorship, innovation, and lifelong learning, we strive to create an environment where every member of our department can reach their full potential.

Whether you are a patient, student, resident, fellow, faculty member, or collaborator, I invite you to explore our department and learn more about the people, programs, and opportunities that make UVA Surgery such a special place. Thank you for your interest in UVA Surgery. I hope you will join us as we work together to advance the future of surgery.

Respectfully,

Allan Tsung, MD, FACS
