About

All first-year BIMS students enroll in the 12-week immersive Core Course in Integrative Biology (CCIB), which serves as a foundation for our BIMS graduate students and will provide them with critical skills and scientific background as they begin their PhD training.

The course is designed to help our BIMS students acquire:

    1. Core facts and concepts, as a foundation for the specialized knowledge they will get from their degree program and thesis research
    2. Fundamental skills that are essential for working scientists
    3. Opportunities to apply what they learn through problem solving
    4. Most importantly, a network of colleagues that can serve as a resource through their training and career

CCIB is held from Monday-Friday each week from 9AM to about 4pm each day.

Mornings will be devoted to whole class sessions/lectures that will typically involve a single faculty member who will organize and present material and/or lead discussion. The afternoons will generally be devoted to a variety of small group activities that include:

  • In depth discussions of primary literature
  • “Hands on” problem solving exercises, projects and workshops
  • Breakout sessions to discuss projects and outcomes
  • Individual and small group study
  • “Methods and logic” sessions centered on classic papers
  • Demonstration and hands-on activities using modern Biomedical research techniques

The schedule for the upcoming CCIB course can be found below
