Nadkarni, a preeminent and pioneering investigator of the rainforest canopy, talks with NPR about her career in the treetops. But, to inspire a new generation of girls to consider careers in science, she’s also created TreeTop Barbie and even dueled with Barbie’s manufacturer, Mattel, over the doll (Mattel let her keep producing TreeTop Barbie on a very limited basis.) In 2018, National Geographic teamed with Mattel to produce a line of “Explorer Barbies” and enlisted Nadkarni as a scientific adviser. Mattel’s series of new dolls focused on exploration and science debuts in fall 2019. Nadkarni most recently talked at Medical Center Hour in September 2016.
