VISUAL ARTS FOR PERSONS LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

Founded by a neurologist and a museum educator, Arts + Minds creates visual arts programs for persons living with dementia in order to make a positive contribution to well-being. In six years of programming at four major museums in New York City, Arts + Minds has cultivated a rich, reciprocal dynamic wherein people with dementia, their family members, professional caregivers, teaching artists, and student interns all contribute to a vibrant dialogue of response and interpretation and to creative expression in the studio. Similar museum-based activities for persons with dementia and their caregivers have arisen in communities nationwide, including Charlottesville.
In this Medical Center Hour about Arts + Minds’ award-winning programming, Carolyn Halpin-Healy highlights recent research that demonstrates beneficial impact even broader and deeper than anticipated, extending to museum staff and to medical students who, as practicing physicians, will likely care for elders with dementia.
