Faculty and Staff
Directed by Dr. James Mahoney, the primary goal of the UVA Center for Neuromodulation Research (CNR) is to advance treatment options for addiction and other psychiatric disorders. This involves combining existing therapies, such as behavioral counseling and medications, with innovative treatments involving neuromodulation.
James J. Mahoney, PhD

Director, UVA Center for Neuromodulation Research
Dr. Mahoney is an Associate Professor and Clinical Neuropsychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. Dr. Mahoney has accumulated over 20 years of research experience, most of which has focused on the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders. He has co-authored 88 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including 35 as first or senior author, and has served as a co-investigator on several NIDA- and NIGMS-funded proposals. He has led multiple first-in-the-world and first-in-the-U.S. clinical trials investigating different forms of neuromodulation, including deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound, for the treatment of treatment-refractory substance use disorder.

Daisy Thompson-Lake, PhD
Associate Director, UVA Center for Neuromodulation Research
Dr. Thompson-Lake is the Associate Director of the Center for Neuromodulation Research and an Assistant Professor of Addiction Neuroscience in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. Her work focuses on developing and translating novel neuromodulation approaches, including low-intensity focused ultrasound for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Dr. Thompson-Lake has extensive expertise in clinical trial design and execution, integrating multimodal neuroimaging techniques such as MRI, fMRI, MRS, and EEG with both Bayesian and Frequentist statistical approaches. Her work spans a range of conditions, including stimulant, opioid, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders, as well as neurodevelopmental disorders.
