Research Studies

The UVA Center for Neuromodulation Research conducts clinical trials investigating neuromodulation as a potential treatment for addiction and other psychiatric disorders. Our studies combine cutting-edge technology with rigorous scientific methodology to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of these approaches in human participants. Our research aims to determine the optimal technologies, targets, and dosing strategies for neuromodulation across different populations, with the ultimate goal of developing individualized, scalable treatment approaches that can be implemented broadly.

Treatment-as-usual brain study:  

The UVA Center for Neuromodulation Research (CNR) is seeking men and women ages 18 to 60 to participate in a research study to learn more about substance use and addiction. This study is for individuals who:  

• Have a history of illicit drug use (including non-prescribed medication). 
• Are currently receiving (or are interested in receiving) addiction treatment.

The research study involves: 

• 4 in-person visits over a 3-month period. 
• Questionnaires, interviews, and brain imaging (MRI). 
• All study-related exams and tests are given at no cost. 
• Compensation for visit completion will be provided.

Planned Studies​ 

CNR is actively developing clinical trials in the following areas:​ 

• Low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) targeting brain regions involved in addiction and craving​ 
• Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) for reducing emotional symptoms 
• Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for reducing symptoms of addiction and psychiatric disorders​ 
• Combination approaches pairing neuromodulation with behavioral therapies and medications​

CNR is committed to finding new treatments for addiction and psychiatric disorders, and that work depends on the participation of volunteers. If you or someone you know may be interested in joining a research study, we’d love to hear from you. All participation is voluntary, and our team will walk you through what’s involved before you make any decisions.​ All studies are conducted under the oversight of the UVA Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure participant safety and uphold ethical standards.​
