Before coming to UVA as a Community and Engagement Outreach Specialist, I served a lot of time in my community in High Point and Greensboro, NC. I went to High Point University, where I received my Bachelors in Neuroscience and Psychology. I then went on to obtain my master’s in public health with a community health focus at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During my time in grad school, I was encouraged to become a health and wellness coach, so I completed the training and became a certified Health and Wellness coach. I come from a healthcare background, and most of my previous experience dealt with taking care of and assisting geriatric patients, and patients with various backgrounds and social barriers at the Community Clinic of High Point, a non-profit organization whose mission is to have a healthier community. I also work in the Danville, VA community, mostly with my church, to bring more attention to the community resources available to the Latino community, and other minority groups. I have a passion for health education and advocacy. I believe that with education comes power, and that power can be used to empower individuals to take charge of their health and make knowledgeable decisions that will have beneficial outcomes for both the health system and the communities.
