Dr. Robert M. Carey served as Dean of the University of Virginia Medical School from 1986 to 2002. During his tenure as Dean, Carey founded four departments, initiated five centers, and constructed four new research buildings and a conference center. His research career included seminal discoveries on the role of the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system in hypertension and contributions to several clinical guidelines on the treatment of hypertension. He served as the president of the Endocrine Society and as Past-Chair of the American Heart Association Hypertension Council. It is eminently appropriate that this inaugural, biennial symposium be devoted to the innovations in hypertension.
