Community Engagement
Our Commitment to Community Engagement

Max Luna, MD
At the University of Virginia Department of Medicine, we believe that our mission extends beyond the walls of our clinics and hospitals. As an academic medical department, we have a responsibility to partner with our community, listen to the needs of those we serve, and work together to improve health and well-being across the Commonwealth and beyond.
Community engagement is central to who we are. It reflects our commitment to advancing health equity, strengthening relationships, creating opportunities for collaboration, and ensuring that our work in education, research, and clinical care remains connected to the communities we serve. Through partnerships with community organizations, outreach initiatives, education programs, and service efforts, our faculty, staff, trainees, and learners contribute their expertise while learning from the lived experiences and perspectives of others.
We are grateful for the leadership and dedication of those who have helped advance this mission, including Max Luna, whose work has been instrumental in strengthening the Department of Medicine’s commitment to meaningful community partnerships. His efforts have helped elevate the importance of engagement as a core component of our academic mission and have inspired many across our department to think more deeply about how we serve our community.
Our commitment to community engagement is ongoing and reflects our belief that the best academic medicine is built through partnership, trust, and shared purpose. By working together with our community, we can advance a healthier, more inclusive future for all those we are privileged to serve.
