Research Grant and Scholarly Fellowship
Educational research and scholarly innovation are significant components of the education mission of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. To further scholarly work in these areas, the Center for Medical Education Research and Scholarly Innovation and the Academy for Excellence in Education send an annual Call for Letters of Intent for two distinct awards: (1) Educational Research Grant and (2) Fellowship for Scholarly Innovation in Medical/Biomedical Sciences Education
These awards support faculty in the NxGen, BIMS, and public health educational programs to: conduct rigorous educational research (1) or develop, implement and evaluate projects that involve new educational approaches or novel applications of established approaches (2).
Please visit the MERSI website to learn more about key dates and the process and requirements to apply for either award.
Committees
If you are interested in joining a committee, click on this button to complete the interest form.
Faculty and trainees can get involved in leading the Academy by serving on one of three committees: Membership, Educator Development, and Building Community. Each committee consists of ten members: a chair, vice-chair, and eight at-large members. Committee service will initially be either 2 or 3 year terms, thereby staggering term expiration dates for committee members. The terms for the chair and vice chair will alternate to allow for continuity in the leadership of each committee. Selection of committee members will occur through the Membership Committee while the election of committee chairs and vice-chairs will occur within each committee.
The rosters of current committee members are available on the About Us page.

The Membership Committee is charged with the review and selection of new Members of the Academy. The committee will also be tasked with conceiving the application for designation as a Fellow in the Academy and determining the process to review requirements for Member/Fellow renewal. The committee will have meetings multiple times per year.
The Membership Committee is also tasked with helping to promote Academy events to the members and vetting potential programs that will be eligible for Academy endorsement. Endorsed programs can be used to fulfill renewal obligations.
The Educator Development Committee is charged with the collaborative creation of educational development programs with the Center for Medical Education Research and Scholarly Innovation (MERSI) and for endorsing programs developed by other entities within the UVA School of Medicine such as the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development (OFAFD) and individual departments. The committee will have meetings multiple times per year to accomplish its responsibilities.
The development and endorsement of educator programming can occur in multiple ways:
- Departmental Programs: The committee may endorse programs for speakers or events with individual departments within the SOM that are consistent with the mission of the Academy. A representative or host from the department will be asked to provide standard information for review by the committee (application forthcoming).
- Academy Mentoring Programs: Under the direction of the vice-chair, the Educator Development Committee will organize a series of talks by Fellows each semester to provide mentoring opportunities for Academy members. Topics will meet an area of interest/need of other members and will be given to limited groups of people to provide a small group environment and promote discussion. Talks will be planned with at least 3 months advance notice to allow scheduling and advertisement to the entire Academy.
- Academy /MERSI Programs: The Educator Development Committee will work with MERSI to develop educator programs that will benefit the entire Academy. The committee will be responsible for working with MERSI and OFAFD to develop schedules for programs that will be occurring during each academic semester. These programs will be reviewed by the committee to determine if they meet the mission statement of the Academy and, if so, advertise the program as an endorsed activity. Endorsement implies a commitment to advertise within the general membership and provide credit for members towards membership requirements.
- Communication: The Educator Development Committee is tasked with communication to the entire membership about the Academy led and endorsed programs.
The Building Community Committee is charged with organizing the social and professional networking events for members of the Academy and other colleagues interested in education within the SOM. This committee will have two meetings annually.
The work of this committee is focused on three areas:
- Excellence in Education Week: The Building Community Committee is responsible for organizing events related to the annual Excellence in Education Week.
- New Member Induction/Annual Meeting: The Building Community Committee is responsible for organizing the new member induction ceremony and annual meeting of the Academy. These two events celebrate the induction of all the members during the previous year and highlight the mission of the Academy and the successes of its members.
- Funding for Collaborative Educational Projects: Depending on funding availability, the Academy may solicit applications for collaborative projects in education through this committee. Faculty members in the Academy are eligible to apply. Faculty applying for this collaborative funding must represent at least two different SOM departments.
