Research Description
Dr. Carl L. Berg received his B.A. magna cum laude from Williams College and then attained his M.D. from the Washington University School of Medicine. After completing his training in Internal Medicine at Washington University, he pursued fellowship training and later joined the faculty in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Harvard University and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the faculty at UVA in 1997 and has been responsible for the direction of the program in liver diseases at the Medical Center since his arrival as well as instrumental in expanding the GI fellowship training program designed to train future physician/scientists in gastroenterology and hepatology. His research interests focus on developing novel approaches to acute and chronic liver disease including artificial liver support systems, as well as novel approaches to human liver transplantation. Dr. Berg serves in a leadership role in liver transplantation, chairing national committees with UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) directed at improving outcomes from transplantation nationwide. In addition, Dr. Berg serves as national co-chair for the National Institutes of Health funded study of Adult to Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation, a seven year study aimed at identifying outcomes associated with this novel approach to expanding the availability of liver transplantation in the United States. Dr. Berg is the author of more than 70 articles, textbook chapters and abstracts related to liver diseases, and serves on numerous Editorial Boards and NIH grant review study sections.
