Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in clinical care, education, and research. For decades, our Division has led in the fields of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), motility, celiac disease, hepatology and liver transplantation, pancreatobiliary disease, and interventional endoscopy.

Our Division is committed to an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, providing integrated services for a comprehensive range of digestive disorders. We offer state-of-the-art endoscopic care, and our extensive clinical trials program gives patients access to novel medical therapies and endoscopic techniques/technologies. Our liver transplant program is among the busiest in the southeast. We regularly care for patients throughout Virginia and neighboring West Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Patients from the U.S. and other countries seek our expert clinicians for specialty care.

Our faculty is a team of dedicated educators who strive to create an environment that offers exceptional training to our fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers. Many of our physicians have been recognized with awards for teaching on both state and national levels.

Our Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship program provides an outstanding educational experience that includes exposure to a diverse array of patients in the inpatient consult service, our outpatient specialty clinics, our outpatient ambulatory endoscopy units, and our hospital-based endoscopy unit. Trainees gain exposure to all aspects of clinical gastroenterology and hepatology, including in liver transplantation and advanced endoscopy. Our fellows also benefit from clinical and translational research exposure and medical education opportunities. We are also proud of our longstanding transplant hepatology and advanced endoscopy fellowship programs, which have produced leaders in these fields on a national level.

Our Division has a rich history of participating in groundbreaking research that has changed clinical practice and benefitted patients worldwide. We have participated in or led studies to dose-find infliximab, promote living-donor liver transplantation, revolutionize the field of coagulopathy in liver disease, and improve the safety and efficacy of new fields of endoscopy, such as interventional EUS, endobiliary ablation, EMR, ESD, third-space endoscopy. The three Nobel prizes in the UVA School of Medicine are associated with gastrointestinal physiology, with our most recent Nobel Laureate (in 2005) being Professor Barry Marshall, who received this prestigious honor with Dr. Robin Warren for their pioneering work on Helicobacter pylori. This legacy of innovation and discovery inspires us to continue pushing the boundaries of healthcare.

The Digestive Health Program is based in the UVA Medical Center, part of the UVA Health System. We are located in beautiful and historic Charlottesville, Virginia, and we are proud to be a part of one of the top U.S. public universities.

On behalf of our faculty, fellows, and staff, welcome to the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology!
