Research Interests
Understanding mechanisms of ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury after lung transplantation to identifying therapeutic targets.
Research Description
My lab studies clinically relevant issues including lung ischemia-reperfusion injury after transplant, organ preservation, ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), and in vivo lung perfusion (IVLP) as a surgical treatment of ARDS. Specifically, we are focusing on mechanisms of vascular inflammation, endothelial and epithelial barriers, edema, and innate immune responses. Signaling pathways of interest include DAMP molecules, purinergic signaling, TRPV4, Panx1, and Piezo1 channels in pulmonary vascular endothelium, epithelium, macrophages, and neutrophils. We utilize various models including in vitro hypoxia-reoxygenation exposure, murine lung ischemia-reperfusion, porcine lung transplantation and ischemia-reperfusion, EVLP of porcine DCD donor lungs, and IVLP treatment of severe ARDS in pigs.
