This Spring, UVA Pathology had a fantastic time in Baltimore for USCAP 2024.  Our work kicked off with a Monday morning Short Course on WHO Classification Updates for Pituitary Tumors from Dr. Bea Lopes.  Later that morning, residents and fellows shared their work in the Stowell-Orbison Poster session with topics ranging from FOLR1 as an emerging therapeutic target to unique subtypes of high-grade endometrial carcinomas to diagnostic challenges in gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. Trainees Meg Dibbern (fellow), Kyle Carlson (PGY1), Cheyanne Painter (medical student), and Brett Kurpiel (PGY4) all did a superb job explaining their work to interested visitors.

Drs. Elizabeth Courville and Ifey Obiorah next led a well-attended Short Course on Pediatric Lymphomas, and the afternoon concluded with more poster presentations on topics such as somatically derived yolk sac tumors as well as more educational-oriented multi-institutional work evaluating the unified timeline for surgical pathology fellowships.  Everyone celebrated their hard work over our annual dinner at the Kona Grill, and were joined by both incoming trainees and program alumni.

As the week progressed PGY1 Alex Yanko shared at superb platform presentation on accuracy and reproducibility of the immunohistochemical stain scoring in hematopathology specimens, doing his mentors Jeffery Craig and Elizabeth Courville proud with his clear and expertly delivered talk.  Dr. Anne Mills rounded out the week with a Short Course on Biomarkers in Squamous and Glandular Neoplasia.  Another successful meeting on the books, with plenty of publications already in the works!  We look forward to convening again in Boston for USCAP 2025: hope to see you there!
