Consult Service: Serving the inpatient population at University of Virginia Hospital and the Transitional Care Hospital.
Outpatient Clinic: Patients with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, amputations, pain, and general physical medicine and rehabilitation needs.
Research Interests: Spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, amputation/ major limb loss.
Background
Bio: Dr. Heather Asthagiri, formerly Heather Powell, was born and raised in Tennessee. She pursued undergraduate education at the University of Memphis, and later her medical degree at the University of Tennessee Memphis College of Medicine. After graduating from medical school in 2004, she completed an internship with the University of Tennessee/ Methodist Healthcare Transitional Year Program. In 2005, she started residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. After completing residency in 2008, she moved to Cleveland, OH where she participated in a one-year fellowship program in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine with Case Western Reserve University/ MetroHealth. Immediately following fellowship she began employment as Assistant Professor of Neurology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, and later with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. While employed by the military, she treated a large number of wounded warriors/ soldiers with amputations and traumatic brain injuries. She also served as Director of the Seating and Mobility Clinic at Walter Reed. In 2013, she returned to Charlottesville, VA as Assistant Professor in the UVA PM&R Department. Her clinical interests are spinal cord injury medicine, traumatic brain injury, amputee care, and wheelchair/ seating systems.
