What are Clinical Trials?

Clinical trials are research studies that involve people. They are the final step in a long process that begins with research in a lab and frequently leads to improved patient care for people worldwide. By evaluating the results of clinical trials, we can find better treatments and ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. Many standard treatments used today are the result of past clinical trials.

Radiation Oncology participates in many clinical trials and studies which may include experimental treatments and procedures, often unavailable elsewhere.

The research team in the UVA Department of Radiation Oncology includes physicians, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurses and clinical research coordinators.

It is the clinical research team’s responsibility to ensure patient safety for all subjects who participate in our trials, federal regulatory compliance and adherence to standards of good clinical practice. These clinical trials are also conducted under the supervision of the UVa Institutional Review Board and the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center.
