James M. Larner, M.D., FASTRO

Professor and Chair, Radiation Oncology 

Dr. Larner is Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and the primary radiation oncologist for the Neuro-Oncology Center and the Thoracic Oncology service at UVA. Dr. Larner specializes in radiotherapy for central nervous system tumors including radiosurgery, and lung cancers including high dose, small volume treatments known as stereotactic body radiation therapy. His research focus is on increasing the effectiveness of radiation through new molecularly targeted agents.

Paul W. Read, M.D., Ph.D.

Vice Chairman and Medical Director

Dr. Read is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and is a member of the UVA Academy of Distinguished Educators. In 2012, he was awarded a CMS Innovation Challenge Award to improve health and health care of patients with advanced cancer. Dr. Read is currently developing a new clinical workflow which will revolutionize the treatment of patients with bone metastases into a non-invasive 30 minute procedure, and a clinical trial for head and neck cancer patients that aims to reduce treatment-related toxicity.

Timothy N. Showalter, M.D., MPH

Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and Residency Program Director

Dr. Showalter is an attending physician and serves as the Residency Program Director in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He specializes in genitourinary, gynecologic, pediatric, melanoma and sarcoma cancers. As a clinical researcher, Dr. Showalter is focused on improving outcomes for patients with high-risk prostate cancer, developing more effective and convenient radiation therapy schedules, and evaluating advanced technologies for brachytherapy and external beam radiation therapy.

Shiv Khandelwal, M.D., FACRO 

Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology

Dr. Khandelwal treats patients with radiotherapy for benign and malignant tumors of all types. His research interests include breast cancer and investigating the most effective ways to deliver radiation while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. He is currently the principal investigator in a pilot study of a new treatment for breast cancer.

  Einsley-Marie Janowski, M.D., Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology

Dr. Janowski is an attending physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology. She specializes in radiation treatment for patients with breast, gastrointestinal, and gynecologic cancers. As a clinical researcher, she is focused on investigating relevant biomarkers to evaluate treatment response and to predict for treatment related toxicity. Dr. Janowski’s research has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications and national meeting presentations.

Adjunct Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology

Dr. Kersh is an adjunct attending physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He sees patients in the Williamsburg Radiation Therapy Center and Riverside Regional Medical Center. He sees patients of all tumor types but specializes in Gamma Knife radiosurgery and body radiosurgery.
