Research/Clinical Interests
Dr. Wijesooriya joined the UVA faculty in 2008. She received her PhD in Nuclear Physics from William & Mary in 1999 and trained at Argonne National Laboratory and Virginia Commonwealth University. She is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology. She implemented several programs at UVA, including total body irradiation, motion management and deep inspiration breath-hold. She has extensive experience commissioning linear accelerators and is the lead physicist for national clinical trial protocols at UVA. Her NIH-funded research focuses on translating immune-sparing radiotherapy models from the lab to the bedside. Her research also extends to AI modeling for early lung cancer detection, biomarker-driven survival prediction, automated contouring and treatment planning. She has more than 65 peer-reviewed publications. Her work has been recognized with AAPM’s John S. Laughlin Science Council Research Symposium Award and Best in Physics Award, an ESTRO clinical trial highlight and a feature in ASTRO’s Spring 2026 newsletter. She is also a dedicated mentor who has guided more than 20 medical physics residents, 30 undergraduate and medical students, and several graduate students.
