Jaime Mata, M.S., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Radiology and Medical Imaging and Assistant Director of the Center for In-vivo HPG MRI, has been awarded a grant from the Focused Ultrasound Foundation for his project titled “Non-Invasive Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer.”

Focused ultrasound uses an acoustic lens to concentrate multiple beams of ultrasound on a target inside the body with extreme precision and accuracy. MRI is used to identify and target the tissue that needs to be treated, to guide the procedure in real time, and to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment after the procedure.

Dr. Mata’s project uses MRI-guided focused ultrasound to destroy lung tumors without incisions or surgical removal of a portion of the lung. It also avoids radiation and related side effects. The procedure can be repeated multiple times on a patient if a tumor regrows. This is the second phase of Dr. Mata’s project; the first phase was funded by the Department of Defense. Dr. Linda Martin, M.D., M.P.H., Associate Professor of Surgery in the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Division, is a co-investigator.
