UVA Radiology Celebrates 2024 National Radiologic Technology Week

During November 3 – 9, The University of Virginia’s Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging celebrated National Radiologic Technology Week, or “Rad Tech Week.”

The week observes and recognizes the important role that medical imaging professionals — including physicians, technologists, nurses, and a variety of LIPs — play in patient care and health care safety. The vast majority of patients who receive health care receive some type of imaging service – so our service line and our various teams have a major impact on health care quality and outcomes.

For years, the event planning has been spearheaded by Administrative Specialist Rita Browne, and this year was one of the most successful in recent memory. Read below to learn how our outstanding team at UVA celebrated, and view the photo gallery here.

Special Events, A Contest for a Good Cause, & Raffles:

Throughout the week, the department were treated to a range of special events. Monday featured a visit from Gracie the therapy dog, while on Tuesday the department displayed their UVA pride by wearing orange and blue and spending some time with UVA’s mascot Cavman.

The department also held a Baking Contest to support UVA’s Hospitality House, which offers refuge for patients during trying times. With 14 fierce competitors, the bake sale resulted in $345 in proceeds going to benefit the House. During Rad Tech Week, UVA Radiology also collected non-perishable items, grocery gift cards, toiletry supplies, and electronics for donation.

One of the mainstays of Rad Tech Week at UVA are the raffle baskets. Teams across the department contributed their time and money to create a record 83 baskets, which were then raffled off throughout the week. Department staff were automatically entered into the drawings, and could take home a range of items: spa kits, movie night supplies, baking ingredients, lottery tickets, and more.

Eating Together:

To celebrate the department, Rad Tech Week is always full (but not over-stuffed!) with food.

Kettle corn, local cookies, fruit & cheese trays were all on the menu throughout the week. All of the food was delivered to individual locations within the main hospital as well as off-site locations.

On Wednesday morning, a pancake breakfast was prepared by managers as a thank you to their staff. It was so successful that for the first time in the event’s history, all of the pancake batter was used up: over 30 pounds!

The week ended with a Friday ice cream social, featuring different flavors and a topping bar.

Night and weekend staff were not forgotten; they were able to enjoy all of the same events that Saturday.
