As radiology and medical imaging advance through digital workflows, artificial intelligence, and 24/7 connectivity, radiologists face new challenges in maintaining focus, balance, and well-being. This talk explores the impact of digital technologies on clinician wellness, cognitive performance, and patient care. Drawing on research in digital well-being, contemplative computing, and positive computing, Dr. Angela Orebaugh will share strategies for reducing digital overload, restoring attention, and approaching technology with a human-centered lens. Participants will gain practical tools to support their own digital well-being and insights into shaping healthier digital cultures in medicine.

About the Lecturer — Angela Orebaugh, PhD

Angela Orebaugh is saving the world bit-by-bit. Her teaching and research is focused on keeping us safe and secure in the cyber world, blended with a passion for promoting mindful, intentional, engagement with technology. She explores the intersection of technology, mindfulness, and digital well-being in partnership with UVA’s Contemplative Science Center where she serves as the co-editor of the Contemplation + Technology special edition of the Journal for Contemplative Studies. She has developed a new course titled Human-Centered Computing for Digital Well-Being, which teaches students how to design and use technology to support human flourishing.

Angela’s work in digital well-being builds on her extensive background in cybersecurity. Prior to academia, she spent over 25 years in industry, providing cybersecurity expertise to clients such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Department of Defense (DoD), intelligence agencies, small businesses, and start-ups. Her mission in academia is to leverage her industry experience to create exceptional learning opportunities for students, equipping them with both the technical skills and mindfulness practices needed to thrive in the digital age.

Angela completed her Ph.D. at George Mason University’s Volgenau School of Engineering with published papers in the areas of behavioral biometrics, data mining, authorship analysis, and cyber forensics.  She completed her Master of Science in Computer Science at James Madison University and a Master of Liberal Arts in Sustainability at Harvard University with a capstone focus in creating technology-focused sustainability curriculum.  In addition to teaching at the University of Virginia, she has taught cybersecurity at George Mason University, UC Berkeley, and Penn State.  Angela is an author of six technology books, over thirty published articles, and co-author of seven NIST publications.  Her professional service includes Co-editor of the Contemplation + Technology Special Edition of the Journal of Contemplative Sciences, the International Journal of Internet of Things and Cyber-Assurance Editorial Board, UVA Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) Steering Committee, UVA Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) faculty advisor, Virginia Cyber Range Executive Committee member.
