Colin Derdeyn, MD

Colin Derdeyn, MD, is a national leader, clinician, pioneer in advancing stroke care, and the future Chair of UVA’s Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging. Dr. Derdeyn comes to UVA from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he has served as chair of the Department of Radiology since 2015. Dr. Derdeyn’s practice is limited to the endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disease, including ischemic stroke. His research interests primarily relate to occlusive cerebrovascular disease and cerebral hemodynamics. He has extensive experience in stroke-related clinical trials as an executive investigator, including COSS and SAMMPRIS and currently MOST. He was the director of the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center at Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital from 2007 – 2015, and the PI of the NIH-funded SPOTRIAS stroke research center. He has been the PI of several other NIH research grants as well. He chaired the DSMBs for several past and present clinical trials, including ESCAPE, ICTUS-L, MR RESCUE, ROADSTER, MIND and MISTIE-3. He has also supervised image cores for several clinical trials including COSS, LVIS, and ANSWER.

Dr. Ziv Haskal, MD, FSIR
Professor of Radiology and Medical Imaging

Dr. Haskal is a tenured professor of radiology and medical imaging in the Division of Interventional Radiology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He received his M.D. at Boston University School of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. As a sought after teacher and educator, Dr. Haskal has given more than 500 invited lectures worldwide and been awarded numerous honorary fellowships, national, international and societal awards for leadership, service and research excellence. He has designed, participated or led more than 40 research trials. Dr. Haskal has also published more than 400 scientific manuscripts, chapters, review, abstracts and editorials in journals ranging from Human Gene Therapy and the New England Journal of Medicine, to Circulation, JVIR, Radiology, Hepatology and more. Dr. Haskal was the editor in chief of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) from 2011-2020, doubling its manuscript submissions, raising its impact factor and introducing numerous print, electronic and new media offerings.
