Teleradiology at UVA
Serving Our Local Community
The University of Virginia Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging offers a wide variety of teleradiology services, supporting patients and healthcare partners across the community. The organizations we serve have included federally qualified health centers, urgent care facilities, critical access facilities, the Department of Corrections, clinics and a standards-based national radiology group. Our clinical expertise is provided by physicians that have been fellowship-trained in the following subspecialties:
- Advanced Imaging (CT/MR)
- Body Imaging
- Musculoskeletal Imaging
- Breast Imaging
- DEXA Imaging
- CT Lung Screenings
- Vascular Ultrasound
- B Reads
- Patients can choose which B Reader they want analyzing their lung x-rays. In Virginia, Dr. Alan Ropp at UVA Health is the only known certified B Reader who is also a specialized lung imaging radiologist. Read on to learn more about the benefits of choosing a lung imaging radiologist as your B Reader. A B reader is a doctor certified by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH). They are specially qualified to determine if patients have signs of pneumoconiosis (also known as black lung). These physicians examine x-rays of the lungs to look for signs of the disease. Their reports can determine whether a patient may be eligible for federal programs and benefits. To learn more visit: https://blog.radiology.virginia.edu/b-reader/

Sub-Specialized Radiologists
UVA Radiology and Medical Imaging becomes an extension of the groups with whom we work. We readily interpret all cases regardless of difficulty, allowing practices to grow with confidence in their radiology services.
“I am comforted by having the whole team of UVA sub-specialized radiologists on my staff. If I run into a difficult case by day, we simply send it to UVA and I know that our referring physicians will have their clinical question answered. Even though our hospital is very remote, we enjoy having the ‘Best of the Best’ on our team through UVA’s clinical expertise and comprehensive reports. This enhances our ability to provide optimal care for our patients, and I enjoy the extra subspecialty help from time-to-time.”

Quality Assurance
Our faculty conducts a robust, professional assessment of their practice and our peer review process exceeds requirements established by the American College of Radiology for accreditation. We randomly select sample “good catch” cases (and any discrepancies) performed by our radiologists and discuss in an open forum, regardless of origin. Physicians are thereby able to learn continuously, drawing upon the myriad of expertise within the department.
Joint Commission Accreditation
We can delegate our Joint Commission Accreditation to your organization, resulting in substantial time and cost savings.
