Detailed Instructions for Applying

Our program has a rolling admission process and applicants are informed as soon as completed applications and supporting materials are reviewed. Applications must be received by February 1st to be considered. Apply Early!

Step 1: Submit the On-line Application

The on-line application must be received before transcripts or letters of recommendation are submitted. A sample application listing the application questions, can be viewed here.  The on-line application does not save your work, so please review the sample application and prepare any answers which require longer statements before you begin the actual application to avoid losing your work.

Once you follow the link to the secure on-line application form, you will be asked to provide a variety of information, including two brief paragraphs describing your past research experience and long term goals, and your research interests.  Provide information that will help us identify potential faculty mentors for you. State the departments or programs, or research centers at UVA with which you are familiar, and the names of UVA faculty members you know or have heard of with whom you would be interested in doing a summer research project.

After you submit your on-line information, you will be directed to a page with instructions on how to complete the remainder of your SRIP application. These instructions can also be found below.

Step 2: Request Recommendation Letters

Please have faculty members familiar with your research or academic background complete the SRIP Recommendation Form for you. Though the on-line application allows you to enter the names of a maximum of four referrers, to review your application, we only require a minimum of two letters of recommendation.

Completed recommendation forms will need to be received by February 8th. This is a one week grace period after the February 1, 2018 deadline for submission of the on-line application.

Do not submit materials in support of your application unless you have already completed the on-line application. Protection of student privacy dictates that any materials we are unable match to an active application must be shredded.

How to Use the Recommendation Form:

1) Open the form in the desired format. Note: if you are using the PDF form your recommender will need Abobe Acrobat or another PDF editor. Adobe Reader cannot save PDF changes to this form.

2) Add your personal information in the first two fields, select “SAVE AS”. Change the name of the document, combining your last name, and the last name of your referrer (ex. Jones_Smith.doc) and forward the form to your recommender for completion and submission.

Alternately, you may supply your referrer with a link to this page and they can retrieve the form that best suits their needs. They may provide their text on separate letterhead if this is convenient, but we would still benefit from completion of the evaluation form.
