Dr. Elana Maccou recently led a partnership with City of Promise, a local organization that promotes student achievement. Their series, “Tour of the Town,” provides an opportunity to expose students to various careers and high functioning positions held by Black and other historically excluded persons in the greater Charlottesville area. Twelve 5th-8th grade students joined UVA Surgery for a tour of the new OR suites, Radiological Imaging, Emergency Department, SICU and acute care surgical floor. The students learned about the path to surgical residency, anesthesia, intraoperative imaging, endovascular procedures, aortic valve replacement, health screening, and diagnostic imaging techniques.
