    Assistant Professor of Medicine

Andrew J. Barros, MD, grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, and did his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia in computer science. After graduating, he went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia and then fellowship training in pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine at the University of Virginia. After his fellowship, Dr. Barros joined UVA as an assistant professor of medicine, focusing on pulmonary disease and critical care.

Dr. Barros sees patients in the UVA Pulmonary Clinic and his research interests include using high dimensional electronic health record data and medical data science techniques to improve care quality and outcomes in hospitalized adults. Dr. Barros focuses on using data science to answer clinical questions, support clinical trials, and develop predictive models. His research has been funded by foundation grant, the integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV). Randall Moorman, director of CAMA and cofounder of HeRO, served as his KL2/iTHRIV mentor.

Among Barros’ most recent research experiences was his work on physiologic effects of proning in patients with severe COVID-19. Using several analytical tools, including a Bayesian general linear model, this study concluded that proning selectively improves oxygenation without significant cardiovascular impact. His contribution as a data science collaborator led to developing the structural framework and analyses in different aspects of critical care including medical emergencies, epidemiology and infection control, pathophysiologic signatures and bedside monitoring.

Leveraging his background in computer science and bedside critical care, Dr. Barros works with the clinical team at CAMA, to provide insights into high-risk vital sign time series records using ML or DL.
