UVA Anesthesiology faculty and trainees had a remarkable presence at the 2025 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in San Antonio, TX (October 10–15), leading sessions, workshops, panels, and posters across multiple subspecialties. From pain medicine and perioperative management to regional anesthesia, education, and critical care, UVA Anesthesiology showcased its depth of expertise and national leadership.
Highlights include:
- Mike Mazzeffi, MD, MPH, MSc, FASA – spoke on Sedation for High-Risk Patients, Blood Transfusions and Postoperative Infections, and Coagulation Factor Therapy in Cardiac Surgery.
- Lynn Kohan, MD – contributed to sessions on Opioid Agonists and Antagonists in the Perioperative Period, Surgical Pain Medicine Training, and Ultrasound-Guided Craniofacial Pain Procedures.
- Melissa Byrne, DO, MPH, FASA – led workshops on Gastric Ultrasound Image Acquisition and POCUS for Anesthesiologists, and presented on Regional Anesthesia for Geriatric Surgery.
- Nabil Elkassabany, MD, MSCE, MBA – moderated panels on Measuring Outcomes in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, Quality Measure Development, and High-Yield Peripheral Nerve Blocks.
- Ashley Shilling, MD – presented on Regional Anesthesia Complications and Motor-Sparing Blocks in Ambulatory Surgery.
- Bhiken Naik, MMBs, PhD/MPH – delivered talks on Awake Spine Surgery Anesthesia and Blood Pressure Control in Stroke Thrombectomy.
- Iyabo Muse, MD, FASA – spoke on Regional Anesthesia in Cardiac Surgery and Complications in Neuraxial Anesthesia.
- Priyanka Singla, MBBS, MD – led sessions on Buprenorphine for Acute Pain and Ultrasound-Guided Pain Procedures.
- Paul Gallo, MD – presented Contraindications and Caution in Vasopressor Use.
- Hugh Lanier, MD – co-presented on Amiodarone Toxicity in the Cardiac ICU.
- Erin Hennessey, MD, MEHP – presented on Cardiac Arrest Algorithms and ICU Pulmonary Dysfunction Management.
- Patrick Monette, MD – discussed Resident Teaching Excellence.
- Zhiyi Zuo, MD, PhD – served as moderator for FAER Medical Student Poster Presentations.
- Victoria Bailey, MD, and Ruchik Sharma, MBBS, MD – presented Medically Challenging Pediatric Anesthesia Cases.
