At the University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology, our mission is to provide exceptional patient care, train the next generation of leaders, and advance research that drives the future of perioperative medicine. Founded in 1955, our department has played a pivotal role in advancing anesthesiology, pain medicine, and critical care through the work of countless distinguished physicians, scientists, and educators. Over the past two decades, we have expanded significantly, with a perioperative team of anesthesiologists, CRNAs, advanced practice providers, and trainees delivering care to tens of thousands of patients annually across diverse clinical settings. Our externally funded research enterprise spans neuroscience, pain medicine, biotechnology, critical care, and informatics and outcomes research.
